Laser Vision-Correction Co-Management

There are many types of laser vision correction, however, LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) has become the most popular refractive procedure and is the vision correction procedure of choice for refractive surgeons around the world. A thin flap is created in the cornea using a microkeratome blade or, more commonly in recent years, an IntraLase Femtosecond Laser (Bladeless). The flap is carefully moved aside while an excimer laser (193nm ArFl – UV laser) is then used to remove thin layers of the remaining cornea to change its shape.

Trafalgar Ridge Optometry can help patients decide if laser vision correction is right for them. Our Doctors are certified to manage our patients in both the preoperative and postoperative care for the laser vision correction procedure. We are fully educated on the most current technologies for this vision treatment option.

By changing the shape of the cornea, treatment of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism is possible. After the laser treatment, the flap is returned back to its original position and adheres without the use of stitches. The entire procedure takes less than 15 minutes for both eyes. There are two types of LASIK eye surgery, Standard LASIK and Custom LASIK (also known as Wavefront-guided LASIK). Custom LASIK procedures typically yield better results and reduce risks such as night glare.

PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is the next most common laser refractive procedure and is typically performed if the cornea does not have sufficient tissue for flap creation. In this technique the laser re-shapes the cornea directly on the surface which requires the eye to re-grow the most superficial or epithelial layer over days (in which a special contact lens is worn during this time). The new layer of epithelium must smooth itself out which is why the recovery time is longer with this technique. When all is said and done the end results are equivalent to that of LASIK. The Custom Wavefront-guided Laser can also be used with PRK.

Trafalgar Ridge Optometry are proud to work with the best refractive surgeons in the city. We are affiliated with TLC, Bochner, Young Eglinton and Herzig laser eye centers. We co-manage with these surgeons to ensure our patients get the best care possible.
